Popular YouTuber Rajab Butt was reportedly assaulted by a group of lawyers at Karachi’s City Court on Monday. This happened following a court hearing related to a blasphemy-linked case. The incident occurred shortly after his appearance before an additional district and sessions judge. The judge heard his bail plea but adjourned the matter without issuing a formal order.
According to Butt’s legal team and eyewitnesses present at the court, tensions escalated immediately after the hearing. Butt’s lawyer, Mian Ali Ashfaq, claimed that several lawyers attacked his client within the court premises, resulting in injuries. He stated that despite repeated attempts to intervene and stop the assault, the attack continued.
People present at the scene said a heated exchange of words took place between Rajab Butt and some lawyers. This quickly turned into a physical scuffle. Butt’s defence lawyers reportedly stepped in to protect him. They later escorted him safely out of the City Court.
Some lawyers present at the scene claimed they extracted an assurance from Butt that he would not repeat such actions in the future. Meanwhile, others allegedly issued warnings over remarks made against the legal community.
Rajab Butt’s bail application is scheduled to be heard again on January 13. The case registered against him at Haidri police station remains under investigation.
Background of the case
Rajab Butt has been facing scrutiny since earlier this year over blasphemy-related allegations. This followed the launch of a perfume named “295,” a reference to Section 295 of Pakistan’s blasphemy law. The branding sparked widespread criticism, with accusations that it mocked religious laws.
Subsequently, an FIR was registered against him under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act. It also included Section 295-A of the Pakistan Penal Code, which pertains to insulting religious beliefs.
In March 2025, Butt released an apology video from Masjid-e-Haram in Makkah while performing Umrah. In the video, he stated that his actions were He also announced the discontinuation of the perfume, and appealed to religious scholars, the Punjab government, and the Pakistan Army for reconsideration of the case.
If convicted, Rajab Butt could face up to 10 years in prison under the charges.
