Vikram, Jayam Ravi, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starred in Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan II, which had a successful opening day at the box office around the world. Despite a weaker start than the first film in the Ponniyin Selvan franchise, it nonetheless managed to become the highest opening weekend for a Tamil film this year, earning more than both Varisu and Thunivu combined. Over fifty percent of the film’s opening weekend earnings came from overseas markets, bringing the global total to Rs 62.31 crore.
The Indian premiere of Ponniyin Selvan II earned Rs 28.25 crore.
To date, Ponniyin Selvan II has grossed approximately Rs 28.25 crores in India, with roughly 16.5 crores coming from Tamil Nadu, 2.6 crores from AP/Nizam, 3.5 crores from Karnataka, 2.8 crores from Kerala, and 2.85 crores from the northern part of the country. Even though it’s a sequel to the second-biggest Tamil grosser, this seems like a solid start to the film. A positive critical reception bodes well for the film’s continued success at the box office.
