Actor Defends Traditional Attire After Viral Incident Sparks Public Outrage
Pakistani actor and director Yasir Hussain has openly criticized a high-end restaurant in Karachi for allegedly refusing service to a man wearing shalwar kameez, Pakistan’s national dress. The controversy, which has gone viral on social media, has ignited a nationwide conversation around cultural discrimination and elitism in upscale establishments.
In a recent Instagram Story, Hussain condemned what he described as growing disrespect for traditional clothing at clubs and fine-dining restaurants. “This trend of mocking shalwar kameez is gaining ground in so-called elite venues,” he wrote, calling such establishments “wannabe Angrez” — a reference to those mimicking Western attitudes.
Actress Mishi Khan also spoke out, sharing a video on Instagram where she criticized the restaurant’s alleged stance. “Can you believe they called our national dress cheap?” she said, expressing shock and frustration. “We are struggling with economic issues, unemployment, and foreign debt — and now we have to deal with this kind of mindset? What should we wear now, bikinis or hot pants?”
The incident reportedly involved Advocate Abdul Latif, who claimed he was denied entry and mocked by staff with the derogatory term “pendu,” implying someone rural or uncultured. Latif said he has served a legal notice to the restaurant and is now pursuing the matter in Consumer Court.
The enforcement of Western dress codes in Pakistani venues has sparked outrage online, with many seeing it as a form of class-based discrimination and cultural erasure. Yasir Hussain compared the attitude toward shalwar kameez to the diminishing respect for the Urdu language in elite spaces.
Social media users have rallied in support of cultural pride, calling for a boycott of restaurants that discriminate against traditional attire. “Boycott such places — let them remember their boundaries,” one user posted. Another added, “We must take a stand to protect our identity.”
