Ayesha Omar Opens Up About Image-Based Abuse and Its Impact on Her Career and Mental Health

Pakistani actor Ayesha Omar has spoken candidly about the lasting effects of image-based abuse. She revealed how private vacation photos shared online without her consent negatively affected both her career and emotional well-being.

In an interview with BBC Global Women, Omar discussed her experience. This was part of a report by gender justice organization Chayn. The report examined cases of image-based abuse among women in Pakistan and diaspora communities across several countries.

Omar recalled how personal photos from a holiday in Thailand with friends were allegedly taken from her laptop and circulated online without her permission. The images showed her enjoying time at the beach in casual vacation attire. Additionally, they quickly spread across social media platforms.

According to Omar, the unauthorized sharing of the photos had serious consequences. She revealed that the incident damaged her professional reputation, resulted in lost work opportunities, and created significant emotional distress.

The actor explained that the experience left her constantly anxious and vigilant. She often worried about being secretly photographed or recorded in public spaces as a result.

Chayn founder Hera Hussain, who collaborated on the report, emphasized that image-based abuse extends beyond explicit content. She noted that the key issue is the lack of consent rather than the nature of the image itself.

The report also highlighted similar experiences faced by other women, including a Pakistani woman identified as Mahnoor. Her private photos were allegedly shared without permission, causing severe personal and family repercussions.

Experts warn that image-based abuse has evolved with digital technology. It allows individuals to manipulate, crop, and misuse photos to create misleading narratives and damage reputations.

Omar’s story sheds light on the growing issue of digital harassment. It also highlights the urgent need for stronger protections against image-based violence, particularly for women navigating public and online spaces.
