Tom Cruise’s Thrilling Wing Walking Stunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Was Inspired by a TikTok Video

In a surprising twist, one of the most jaw-dropping stunts in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning was inspired by none other than a TikTok video. Director Christopher McQuarrie shared the story behind the viral moment during a Cannes Masterclass, revealing how a casual scroll through social media led to one of the film’s most unforgettable scenes.

“I showed Tom a TikTok video of someone wing walking, thinking it was just for fun,” McQuarrie recalled. “But Tom looked at it and said, ‘I can do that.’”

And he did.

The wing walking stunt, which sees Tom Cruise strapped to the wing of a plane mid-flight, quickly became a highlight of the film’s promotion. According to McQuarrie, it was born out of the actor’s constant desire to push the limits of what’s possible in action cinema.

A Collaborative Vision Between Cruise and McQuarrie

McQuarrie shared how the duo starts each Mission: Impossible installment by listing out their dream stunts. For Dead Reckoning, Cruise had his heart set on wing walking, while McQuarrie wanted to explore an underwater submarine sequence. Their creative brainstorming often evolves into a blend of big ideas, with Cruise pushing the envelope and McQuarrie grounding them in cinematic reality.

“We challenge each other. I throw in things I’m not sure are possible, and Tom finds a way to make them happen,” McQuarrie said.

Industry Experts Were Skeptical — Cruise Proved Them Wrong

Interestingly, seasoned wing walkers initially believed the stunt couldn’t be performed safely — especially at the scale Cruise envisioned. But the production team remained undeterred, working closely with professionals to choreograph the sequence with precision and safety.

Tom Cruise’s Legacy of Real Stunts Continues

This wing walking feat adds to Cruise’s growing list of real-life, high-stakes stunts throughout the Mission: Impossible franchise — from clinging to the side of a moving plane to holding his breath underwater for extended takes. With Dead Reckoning, Cruise once again proves he’s not slowing down.

While some early reviews indicate that Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning may feature fewer action scenes than its predecessors, each sequence is designed to leave a lasting impression. And the wing walking moment? It’s already being hailed as a standout
