Pakistan Idol is making a long-awaited comeback after more than a decade, with a fresh panel of judges and a renewed focus on discovering the nation’s next big music stars.
The iconic music competition is set to return with a powerful lineup of judges including legendary vocalist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, former Strings band member Bilal Maqsood, acclaimed singer Zeb Bangash, and popular actor Fawad Khan. The revival promises fresh talent, exciting performances, and a nationwide search for the next music sensation.
Pakistan Idol’s Legacy and New Era
First airing in 2014 on Geo TV, Pakistan Idol was the local adaptation of the globally popular British show Pop Idol. The show instantly became a cultural phenomenon, drawing massive participation and viewership from across Pakistan. Its original judging panel featured Ali Azmat, Bushra Ansari, and Hadiqa Kiani, with Zamad Baig emerging as the season’s winner.
Former contestants credit the show for jumpstarting their careers. Waqas Ali Vicky, a season one participant, shared, “Pakistan Idol markets you and shapes you musically. It gave us an opportunity to grow and learn.”
Another finalist, Rose Marie, added, “It’s a dream platform. You get exposure across the country, and the professionalism of the team made it even more special.”
A Platform for Raw Talent and Career Growth
The show has long been praised for nurturing raw talent, offering a space where artists could experiment with musical styles and polish their performance skills. “We were all raw talent,” said Vicky. “We learned how to present ourselves, how to adapt, and how to grow as musicians in a highly focused environment.”
Marie also emphasized how Pakistan Idol opened doors for her in the industry. “I made valuable connections that led to work on drama OSTs, film songs, and commercial jingles,” she said.
For many contestants, the show was not just about singing—it was about finding identity and belonging. Vicky noted, “I didn’t come from a musical family. But through this platform, I built a name. People followed me from across the world, and that helped keep me connected with fans.”
Global Vision for Local Talent
According to Zoya Merchant, Director of MHL Global, which will stream the show across five TV networks, the goal is to highlight Pakistan’s untapped musical talent. “Pakistan has incredible music potential. This platform will showcase it not just locally but on a global scale,” she told Variety.
