Gadar 2, Anil Sharma’s follow-up to his cross-border drama and 2001 smash, premiered its first trailer on Wednesday. Kargil Vijay Divas, India’s yearly remembrance of soldiers fallen in the Kargil war, coincided with the event, which was attended by the film’s cast and creators, including Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel. The statement Deol made on relations between India and Pakistan, however, was the one that everyone spoke about.

According to ANI’s reporting, at the inauguration, Deol blamed the “political blame game” for the animosity between India and Pakistan. Deol is also a BJP MP for Punjab’s Gurdaspur. There is mutual affection, he insisted. The film’s central message is that the political blame game between India and Pakistan is what fuels tensions between the two countries. We are all the same, and both countries have individuals who want peace.

A member of X raised the question, “What is this Aman ki Asha b*tch this guy is peddling?” Don’t they always make fun of Pakistan in Gadar? At the Gadar 2 promotional event, a self-proclaimed patriot made obscene comments on Kargil Vijay Diwas, according to another commentator. If Bollywood’s finest can speak out against the industry without offending anyone, what’s the problem?

Further inquiry yielded, “He is Sunny Deol, a BJP MP. He made this proclamation on the eve of Vijay Diwas. The Modi government is in power, and the people in power do the politics. Is Deol aiming at PM Modi? We lost many of our jawans to Pakistan; was it essential to laud them on the eve of Kargil Diwas? Another person, in the meantime, said, “Haha. Sunny Deol must know that people over here in India won’t take that kind of thing lying down. They’ve decided not to see the film. And those people over there can’t afford to see his film because they’re poor!

Deol and Patel reprise their original roles as Tara Singh and Sakina in Anil Sharma’s Gadar 2. The film is a collaboration between Anil and Zed Studios, and it will premiere on August 11. After more than two decades since the first Gadar, fans are understandably excited about the sequel.

The release of the film’s trailer generated buzz for a number of reasons, but how much of an impact Deol’s statement will have on how well Gadar 2 is received remains to be seen. The controversy over his words serves as a reminder of the delicate nature of relations between India and Pakistan and of the power that prominent individuals have to influence public opinion.
