‘Mera Lyari’ Announced to Counter ‘Dhurandhar’ Narrative, Says Sindh Minister Sharjeel Memon

The Sindh government has announced an upcoming film titled Mera Lyari. It positions the film as a direct response to the Indian movie Dhurandhar. The Indian movie has faced widespread criticism for its alleged negative and misleading portrayal of Pakistan and Karachi’s historic Lyari neighbourhood.

Sindh Senior Minister and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon strongly criticised Dhurandhar.

“Lyari is not violence. It represents culture, peace, talent, and resilience,” Memon stated in a post on social media platform X. He added that Mera Lyari, scheduled for release next month, will present the true identity of the neighbourhood. It will highlight its harmony, cultural richness, and pride.

Dhurandhar triggered mixed reactions in India as well, with opinions divided over its depiction of Karachi and Lyari. In Pakistan, however, viewers were quick to label the film as propaganda. Some also expressed disappointment over the lack of locally produced content. Content that authentically showcases Pakistan’s own stories, culture, and social realities.

Highlighting the contrast, a journalist shared a video titled “The Karachi you see in ‘Dhurandhar’ vs the Karachi I saw last week,”. The video compared the film’s portrayal of chaos with Karachi’s vibrant food scene, music, and everyday warmth.

Reiterating his stance, Sharjeel Memon emphasised that Lyari has long been a symbol of social unity, cultural diversity, and artistic talent. He said the upcoming Sindhi-language film aims to present an accurate and positive image of the area.

It alleges unauthorised use of images of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) flag, and footage from party rallies in the film’s trailer.

The petition was filed by PPP activist Muhammad Amir in the District and Sessions Court (South), Karachi. It seeks the registration of an FIR against those involved in the film’s production and promotion. Named in the petition are director Aditya Dhar, producers Lokesh Dhar and Jyoti Kishore Deshpande.

The controversy continues to fuel debate on cross-border cinema, representation, and the responsibility of filmmakers in portraying real places and cultures.
