Veteran lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar has stirred fresh controversy with a fiery statement that’s igniting heated debate in both India and Pakistan. Speaking at a public event in Mumbai, Akhtar bluntly remarked that if given a choice between Pakistan and hell, he would “choose the flames.”
The comment comes at a sensitive time, just weeks after a fragile ceasefire was brokered between India and Pakistan—an agreement meant to ease rising tensions along the border.
Akhtar, no stranger to controversy, made the statement while addressing the relentless criticism he faces from ideological hardliners. However, his words have now triggered strong backlash from Pakistani celebrities, journalists, and the public alike.
Prominent Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir responded with a terse “Go to hell,” while actor Adnan Siddiqui, who had once hosted Akhtar during a visit to Lahore, slammed him on Instagram, calling him “an educated fool.”
Social media platforms have since exploded with criticism, as users from both sides weighed in—many accusing Akhtar of fueling hostility and disrespecting the cultural hospitality previously shown to him in Pakistan.
This latest controversy adds another chapter to the already complex narrative of India-Pakistan relations, where even artistic voices often find themselves entangled in the region’s deeply rooted political divide.
