The Archies, Zoya Akhtar’s Netflix original, revives the nepotism argument in Indian cinema. Akhtar’s film, based on the popular comic series, stars seven newcomers, including Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Agastya Nanda. Veteran screenwriter-lyricist Javed Akhtar defended his daughter’s casting choices in reaction to criticism.

Javed stressed at Sahitya Aajtak 2023 that Zoya should have creative freedom to cast her project. Zoya should be able to cast without interference as a filmmaker, he said. Zoya is taking a personal risk by showcasing these great youngsters, according to Javed Akhtar.

“She can take anyone. We shouldn’t question her. She risks it. She supports her project, “Javed stressed that filmmakers should have casting freedom.

Director Javed further noted that filmmaking involves personal risk. Instead of receiving government or corporate funding, filmmakers contribute their time, effort, and resources to their work. He claimed this allows them to cast performers according to their vision and creative taste.

“The film industry cannot be nepotistic. It can occur anywhere, but not here because people take risks and don’t depend on others.” Javed denied nepotism in the Indian film industry.

The Archies include star kids and newcomers Vedang Raina, Dot, Mihir Ahuja, and Yuvraj Menda. Javed also addressed nepotism in the film industry, arguing that it cannot exist in an environment where people take chances and succeed without others.

As The Archies’ release date approaches, its success and cast performances will undoubtedly contribute to the industry’s casting methods and directors’ creative freedom debate.
