Atif Aslam Claps Back at Criticism Over Performing After Father’s Death

Singer opens up about backlash, Bollywood journey, and his father’s influence on his music

Atif Aslam is not here to justify his choices. In a candid conversation with journalist Faridoon Shahryar on YouTube’s Connect Cine, the celebrated singer addressed the backlash he faced for performing at Karachi’s Independence Day concert just two days after his father’s passing.

“I heard people saying my father passed away and I was still performing the next day,” Atif shared. “Some were using my situation for views, questioning whether I should have gone or not.”

His father, who passed away in August, held a deep connection with his son’s music. Atif recalled how his father was moved to tears hearing him sing Tajdar-e-Haram on Coke Studio for the first time. “I’ve never seen my father cry, but that day he did,” the singer revealed.

While many fans praised his professionalism and resilience, others accused him of prioritizing money over mourning. Social media reactions were split, with some commending his dedication and others calling the decision insensitive.

Despite the criticism, Atif highlighted his father as his biggest source of inspiration. “A person who has lost his father is not afraid of losing anything else,” he said. “That’s where the rebel in me comes from.”

The Dil Diyan Gallan hitmaker also reflected on his career, acknowledging the immense love he has received from both Pakistan and Bollywood. “I miss Bollywood,” he admitted. “It’s been nearly a decade since I last worked there, but I cherish my time in the studios, the friendships, and the growth of the industry.”

With iconic tracks like Meri Kahani, Hum Kis Gali Ja Rahe, and Hona Tha Pyar, Atif remains one of Pakistan’s biggest stars with a legacy that transcends borders. “Our industry is not as vast as Bollywood, but out of the few stars we have, God chose me and made me shine,” he said with gratitude.

Calling himself a “stage animal,” the singer emphasized that live performances fuel his spirit. “When I go on stage, I forget what is happening in the world,” he explained.

Atif Aslam’s story is not just about fame—it’s about resilience, gratitude, and staying true to his art despite criticism.
