“Arijit Singh was exhausted singing the same songs,” says Anurag Kashyap, highlighting the artist beyond playback music

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has weighed in on Arijit Singh’s decision to step away from playback singing. He suggested the celebrated vocalist felt creatively drained after repeating similar musical themes for years.

Arijit Singh, one of India’s most beloved voices known for defining modern love and heartbreak anthems, surprised fans on January 27, 2026, by announcing his retirement from playback singing. Reacting to the news in an interview with Tried & Refused Productions, Kashyap said the singer was “tired of singing the same thing again and again.” He added that the industry often boxes musicians into hit-driven formulas.

According to Kashyap, playback singing is only one facet of Singh’s creative life. He pointed out that Arijit made his debut as a music composer with Pagglait, starring Sanya Malhotra. Arijit has also explored filmmaking, philanthropy, and community work while maintaining a private personal life. “There’s much more to Arijit Singh than heartbreak songs—he wants to do many different things,” the director said.

Kashyap also addressed the broader pressures musicians face, noting that constant demands for chart-topping tracks limit artistic freedom. He emphasized that when artists are given time and creative space, they can deliver more diverse and meaningful work.

Earlier, Arijit Singh confirmed his retirement via social media, thanking fans for years of support and announcing he would no longer accept new playback assignments. The singer, whose work spans multiple Indian languages including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, and Malayalam, called his journey “wonderful.” He now looks toward new creative paths beyond playback singing.
