Celebrities from all walks of life, including the worlds of fashion, entertainment, politics, and sports, descended upon New York City on Monday for the annual Met Gala, where they honoured the late Karl Lagerfeld as the “King of Couture” while also delivering some major baby news.

Alia Bhatt, a newcomer to Bollywood and an instant fan favourite. She made her debut this year and walked the red carpet in a custom outfit by fashion designer Prabal Gurung. The dress had been tailored to fit Bhatt’s body perfectly and had a long, flowing skirt that reached the floor. The tight waistline and boxy shoulders gave the dress an air of refinement while highlighting Bhatt’s hourglass shape.

The elaborate beading and embroidery that covered the bodice of the garment was a standout feature. The subtle details were a homage to neoclassical craftsmanship and gave the otherwise spare design a dash of glitz.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, the other Bollywood star, attended the event with her husband, the American singer Nick Jonas. Chopra wore a black Valentino gown and accessorised with white opera gloves in honour of Karl Lagerfeld. The satin dress had a high slit up to the thigh and a long train with ruched accents at the sides. The actor complemented her ensemble with a set of Bulgari diamond earrings, a necklace, and an ear cuff. She finished her ensemble off with a pair of sleek black heels.

The actress styled her hair into a dramatic high bun, leaving the tail out in front.

Rihanna arrived late as usual but still managed to shut down the red carpet. Serena Williams and Karlie Kloss showed off their baby bumps in style, and two celebrities dressed as Lagerfeld’s cat.
