Pathaan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham, is smashing box office records. The film has grossed Rs. 219.60 crores worldwide and Rs. 123 crore net for its Hindi version in India in two days. On its first two days, the Hindi version of any Indian film broke two single-day records. It is now on track to break some long-term records.
The film is a hit. Yash Raj Films has a perfect record for spy films, from Ek Tha Tiger and Tiger Zinda Hai to War and Pathaan.
Yash Raj Films has produced megahits for 50 years. They have made films like Kaala Patthar, Kabhi Kabhie, Chandani, Silsila, Darr, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Chak De India, the Dhoom series, Veer Zaara, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ek The Tiger, Sultan, War, Tiger Zinda Hai, and Pathaan in their five-decade career. They started as a production house but now have an ecosystem where they distribute films and make music. They have an agency that trains young actors, and they have generally aided the Indian Film Industry and helped to globalize Indian films.
Yash Raj Films’ Spy Universe has been their most successful commercial venture. After Pathaan, Tiger 3 will be their fifth blockbuster spy film. The spy movies give the production house a lot of options for leading heroes, all of which promise big commercial returns if the film resonates with moviegoers.
Since COVID-19, Yash Raj Films had four theatrical failures—Bunty Aur Babli 2, Shamshera, Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Samrat Prithviraj—and was in ruins. Pathaan has ended their drought, so Tiger 3 should take over. Pathaan is showing at local theatres.
