Israeli forces have detained former Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan from a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla. This has sparked strong condemnation from Pakistan. According to the Palestine Action Coalition of Pakistan, Senator Mushtaq was leading a five-member Pakistani delegation as part of the Global Sumud Flotilla. This flotilla was carrying medicine and food supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip.
The flotilla comprised over 40 civilian boats and nearly 500 activists, parliamentarians, and lawyers. It aimed to deliver aid to Palestinians amid Israel’s ongoing blockade. Despite Israel intercepting 13 boats, flotilla organizers confirmed that around 30 vessels are still advancing towards Gaza. Some are less than 50 km from the enclave. A video released by Israeli authorities, verified by Reuters, showed Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg among those detained.
Pakistan’s Response
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Foreign Office have strongly condemned Israel’s actions. They demanded the immediate release of all detained volunteers, including Senator Mushtaq Ahmad. JI leader Amir Hafeez Naeemur Rehman also reiterated his party’s support for the flotilla. He called it a peaceful humanitarian mission to support Palestine.
The flotilla has gained significant global attention, with countries including Turkey, Spain, and Italy monitoring its progress. They are deploying boats or drones to safeguard their citizens onboard. Despite repeated Israeli warnings, international activists continue sailing towards Gaza. This makes the Global Sumud Flotilla one of the most high-profile efforts challenging Israel’s Gaza blockade.
