The last film with a Pakistani setting to screen at Directors’ Fortnight was Jamil Dehlavi’s The Blood of Hussain (1980). Anam Abbas produced In Flames, which is a film on XYZ’s New Visions slate, and Shant Joshi, Todd Brown, and Maxime Cottray served as executive producers. The film features the acting talents of Ramesha Nawal, Bakhtawar Mazhar, Adnan, and Omair Javaid, all of whom play female roles.
In Flames is the riveting story of a mother and daughter whose lives are turned upside down as people from their past, both real and otherworldly, return to cause havoc in their present. When their precarious survival is threatened, they must draw on the power of their friendship to survive the perilous circumstances. In challenging patriarchal traditions, this horror film investigates issues of women’s empowerment.
