Abir Gulaal Set for Indian Release as Fawad Khan Returns to Bollywood

Bollywood fans have reason to celebrate as superstar Fawad Khan makes his much-anticipated comeback with Abir Gulaal, opposite Indian actor Vaani Kapoor. The romantic comedy, already released in the UAE, UK, and other global markets, is now eyeing an India release on September 26, 2025, marking Khan’s return to Indian cinema after nearly a decade.

The film, directed by Aarti S Bagdi and co-written by Meghna Singhee and Sudipto Sarkar, faced uncertainty earlier this year due to strained India–Pakistan relations. With Khan’s Bollywood career halted in 2016 after the ban on Pakistani artists, the project carried significant political weight. Yet, Abir Gulaal has managed to capture international audiences, and its India debut could be a turning point for cross-border collaborations.

Storyline and Performances

Set in London, the film follows Gulaal Bajaj (Vaani Kapoor), a rebellious daughter who defies her father’s traditional expectations and lands an internship with brooding restaurateur Abir Singh (Fawad Khan). What begins as a clash of personalities soon evolves into romance filled with fiery banter, cultural clashes, and emotional twists.

Critics from its UAE premiere describe the movie as a “lighthearted yet engaging rom-com.” Kapoor’s career-best performance has been praised for her comic timing and charisma, while Khan slips effortlessly into his role, winning hearts with his charm and screen presence.

Music and Aesthetics

With Amit Trivedi’s soundtrack, remixed Bollywood classics, and glossy cinematography showcasing London, Abir Gulaal blends nostalgia with modern appeal. The clean, family-friendly approach — free from explicit content — positions it as a film for all age groups.

Challenges and Expectations

While some critics note uneven pacing and unnecessary subplots, the film’s biggest draw remains Fawad Khan’s Bollywood return. If released in India on the proposed date, it may enjoy a solo theatrical run, with no major competitors slated for that weekend.

For fans, the film represents more than just another rom-com; it’s a test of whether Bollywood is ready to welcome Pakistani talent back onto the silver screen.
