8 Pakistani People Who Are Killing It In Hollywood

It’s great to see the rising talent of Pakistan make a name in Hollywood

If you had the chance to see the latest edition of the Emmys, then you may know that our homeboy Riz Ahmed made history as the first Muslim man to win an acting Emmy. Recent years have seen people of South Asian descent take over Hollywood. From Priyanka Chopra starring as the lead in a hit TV series to Mahershala Ali winning an Oscar, Hollywood is finally getting rid of its whitewashed fraternity and letting people of color in.

You will be surprised to know that Indians are not the only ones making a splash in Hollywood as Pakistani too have decided to make their mark on the global stage.

Here is the list of Pakistanis who are kicking ass in Hollywood.

1- Faran Tahir

If you want to know where you have seen this chiseled face before, then the answer to that question might be a little different for everybody. Son of veteran Pakistani actor Naeem Tahir, Farhan has played many iconic roles in Hollywood. From playing the villain in Iron Man 2 to his iconic role as Rhys Bashir in American Crime, this man has done it all.With a BA in Theatre from UC Berkley, you can see this talented actor on the eighth season of the hilarious dramedy Shameless and The Magicians.

2- Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy

This is one woman that needs no introduction. With two Oscars and six Emmys under her belt, this filmmaker had made Pakistan proud while simultaneously drawing light upon sensitive issues such as honor killing. Named as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. she is also the mastermind behind 3 Bahadur. Chinoy is currently working on releasing Pakistan’s first virtual reality film series called Look but with love.

3- Kumail Nanjiani

This talented young man from Karachi has a number of titles under his belt, from standup comedian and actor to writer and podcast host. You can watch his stellar acting chops in the hilarious TV show The Silicon Valley or the heartwarming movie The Big Sick which is a biographical account of him and his wife’s real-life courtship. If you wanted any more reason to fall in love with this man, he is going to star in a buddy-cop movie with John Cena.

4- Dilshad Vadsaria

You may be surprised to know this by everyone’s favorite bitchy Rebbeca Logan in the acclaimed TV show Greek is actually Pakistani. This Karachi born star also played a recurring character on cult favorite TV show Revenge.

If you want to see more of this talented actress, then you can catch her on the show Notorious which is based on the true-life stories of famed criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and cable news producer Wendy Walker Variety.

5- Kamran Pasha

This Karachi born screenwriter has been making waves in Hollywood by writing for series such as Nikita and Sleeper Cell amongst others. His short film titled Miriam won the Gala award at the Moondance Internation Film Festival in 2008. Pasha is also the person behind writing the hit game 50 cent: Blood on the sand for popular American rapper 50 cent. If you want to know more about the writing prowess of this brilliant man then you can read his books called Mother of the Believers and Shadow of the swords.

6- Laraib Atta

Daughter of famous Pakistanis singer Attaulah Khan, Laraib is a stellar VFX artist. This emerging artist has worked in a lot of big scale Hollywood movies that have enthralled the world with their spectacular use of visual effects. Sweeney Todd, The Chronicles of Narnia, , Prince of Persia, Godzilla and X-Men Days of The Future Past are just some of the movies this brilliant young woman has worked on.

7- Mir Zafar Ali

If you have watched movies like Day After Tomorrow, X-Men First Class, The Mummy and The Hulk and have been in awe of the stunning visual effects used in the movie, then you have this brilliant individual to thank. This FAST graduate has three academy awards for his breathtaking visual effects work on The Golden Compass, Life of Pi and Frozen. From making commercials in Pakistan to working for Disney, Ali has come a long way.

If you find yourself chucking at the hilarious one-liners in The Modern Family, then you can thank this man for bringing joy into our lives. This Pakistani American screenwriter has won a Writers Guild award for his par excellence writing skills and has worked for several huge networks including Comedy Central , FOX , Universal and Disney. He is currently displaying his writing chops in The Goodwin Games.

It’s great to see the rising talent of Pakistan make a name for themselves in Hollywood and in front of the whole world. We can’t wait to see what these talented young individuals are going to achieve next in their lives.
